    Description

    General description

Silica gel is a rigid 3D network of colloidal silica.[1] It is exclusively used as a support material for the active titanium (III) centers in Ziegler-Natta catalysts. Silica gel allows a controlled fragmentation leading to form uniform polymer particles with narrow particle size distribution and high bulk density.[2] Silica gel is classified as below:
    a. Aquagel - pores are filled with water
    b. Xerogel - by the process of evaporation, aqueous phase in the pores are removed
    c. Aerogel - solvent removed by supercritical extraction[1]

    application

It has been used for the solid phase extraction (SPE) fractionation of organohalogen compounds in biological organ tissues.[3] Silica gel column may be employed for the clean-up procedures in multiresidue methods of pesticide analyses[4] and as a support for the fabrication of pentachlorophenol (PCP)-imprinted functionalized sorbents for the analysis of trace pentachlorophenol in water samples by SPE combined with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).[5]
Silica gel may be used in separation of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) by simple filtration.[6]
