General description
Methyl cellulose is a water-soluble, non-ionic polymer with hydrophilic glucosidic bonds, derived from the polysaccharide cellulose.[1][2][3]
Application
Methyl cellulose has been used:
- in colony forming assays[3]
- for sperm motility assessment[4]
- for the generation of spheroids[5][6]
- in preparation of agar beads[7]
Biochem/physiol Actions
Methyl cellulose mediates stabilization of oil, water and air mixtures, like foam, by emulsification. Methyl cellulose is used as a binder and thickener for various adhesives.[1][2] It is also used as a treatment of constipation.[8]
