General description
L-cysteine is a sulfur-containing non-essential amino acid.[1] Its ability to reduce colitis symptoms is being assessed for potential use in treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).[2]

Application
L-cysteine can be used as a cysteine source to prepare L-cysteine functionalized gold nanoparticles for use as probes in the colorimetric detection of Hg2+ in aqueous solution.[3]
