Ethyl alcohol, denatured
reagent grade
Synonym: Ethanol
Ethanol (denatured), a primary alcohol, is a constituent of hairspray, disinfectants and cosmetics. It can be synthesized either from molasses by fermentation or by hydration of ethylene. It is made non-consumable by the addition of denaturants.
The product is denatured ethyl alcohol and it contains following as denaturant:
• 1% ethyl acetate
• 1% hydrocarbons
• 1% methyl isobutyl ketone
• 5% methanol
Ethanol, a primary alcohol is an important raw material for the synthesis of various compounds. It can be synthesized either from molasses by fermentation or by hydration of ethylene. It acts as a hydrogen source and reaction medium during the transfer hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds in the presence of sodium hydroxide. The impact of ethanol/water fumigation on the performance of diesel engines has been studied. Denatured alcohol is also referred to as industrial methylated spirit.
Application
Ethyl alcohol (denatured ethanol) may be used to compose the Nital etchant for use in microstructural analysis.
Packaging
